OpenAI is seeking government assistance to construct massive data centers, each requiring five gigawatts of power, a demand comparable to that of major cities. This ambitious proposal emerged from a recent meeting with top AI leaders at the White House, where the Biden administration pledged to expedite the development of AI infrastructure. However, experts express skepticism about the feasibility of such energy demands, noting that five gigawatts is equivalent to the output of five nuclear reactors and could account for over 1% of global electricity consumption if multiple centers are built. Each data center is projected to cost around $100 billion and house 2 million AI chips, essential for maintaining OpenAI’s leadership in generative AI.
While other tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft are also planning to expand their data centers, OpenAI’s proposal is unprecedented in scale. Power company executives question the practicality of meeting these energy needs continuously, especially given current grid capacities. Moreover, there is growing resistance from local and national governments regarding the environmental impact of such developments. Recent legislation has hindered data center expansions in several U.S. states, and concerns persist about the industry’s claims regarding job creation. OpenAI’s leader, Sam Altman, has previously made ambitious funding requests, including a reported $7 trillion for AI chip development, although this figure has since been revised to hundreds of billions.
