SoftBank’s Arm, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, is gearing up to launch its own artificial intelligence (AI) chips by 2025. The U.K.-based chip designer, in which SoftBank holds a 90% stake, plans to establish an AI chip unit to develop a prototype by spring 2025 and commence mass production in the fall of the same year. Arm designs the fundamental architecture for the chips and licenses its designs to companies like Qualcomm and Nvidia, claiming that 99% of premium smartphones are powered by Arm technology. The company will initially cover the development costs of the AI chips, which could amount to hundreds of billions of yen. SoftBank, led by Japanese billionaire Masayoshi Son, is heavily investing in AI and aims to invest $960 million by next year to enhance its computing facilities for generative AI. Additionally, SoftBank plans to build AI data centers across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Middle East by 2026, powered by its own chips. The company’s shares have surged, and it is set to report its earnings for the fiscal year ended March 31 on Monday. This move by Arm reflects the intensifying competition in the AI chip market and SoftBank’s strategic focus on AI technology.
